Told through the voices of numerous immigrants from Latin America, many stories unfold in this book with a focus on the star-crossed young lovers Maribel Rivera and Mayor Toro. We follow their developing relationship as well as the voices of their par-ents and neighbors who struggle with survival, violence, and love. Explore point of view, the role of girls and women in immigrant communities, perceptions of ability and disability, and the treatment of immigrants by the police. We will examine immigration issues and the relationship of the U.S. to the political and violent upheavals that have taken place in Latin America. We will create and perform a group poem using voices of various characters from the book.

RIF(Reading is Fundamental) Chicago and the new CenterSpace at NEIU's Center for College Access and Success invite you for a night of making and learning. In conjunction with the 2016 Follett Essay and Poster Contest, we will be collaborating with you to create lessons so your students can submit their own essay and poster. We will go over how to bring the essay portion to the classroom but also poster design. Through the use of Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator (or the design software of your choice) you will be able to make your own example to bring back to your students. We hope you join us for a fun night of exploring our new CenterSpace while creating engaging curriculum for your students.
