Motivational Interviewing: Conversations with students to improve engagement & support change

Motivational Interviewing (MI) helps people decide to change behaviors that are harmful to themselves and others asthey work towards a better future.This session will focus on adding some conversational skills to the educator tool box. Participants will focus on guiding conversation towardsstudents' intrinsic motivation and helping them develop a commitment to positive behavior change. The session will introduce the four processes involved in MI, understanding the mindset/heartset required, support for autonomy, nonjudgmental acceptance and practicing core skills including accurate empathic reflections. $100-- Scholarships available. Free to CCAS, GEAR UP, and NEIU.
