Identifying, Understanding, and Responding to Challenging Behaviors in Early Childhood Education and Care Settings

This introductory level course is intended to support professionals currently working in early childhood education and care settings to define and identify the purposes of challenging behaviors and to respond in a culturally, linguistically, and developmentally appropriate manner. Students will receive basic information about human growth and development as it relates to challenging behavior and coping and response strategies that promote healthy development and supportive interactions, relationships, and environments. Students will examine examples of challenging behaviors and appropriate response via lecture examples, video, and facilitated peer discussion. Students increased understanding of the purpose of challenging behaviors and appropriate responses will be assessed their ability to describe challenging behaviors and appropriate responses in their own words.
